Red Amaranthus commonly known as Bbugga is a type of amaranth with a deep red pigment in leaves and stems and is common in many dishes. The plant is an indigenous, early maturing with fast vegetative growth and has egg-shaped (ovate) leaves red in colour. The plant matures in 20 – 30 days depending on management, weather and soil type and is capable of generating up to 300 kg/acre at a spacing of 20 – 30 cm between rows by drilling at a rate of 1.2 kg per acre using direct seeding.
